Serena Williams advances to Beijing 3rd round and number 1 ranking

Today in Beijing, after defeating Ekaterina Makarova and advancing to the third round of the China Open, 2nd seed Serena Williams once again achieved the ranking of number 1 in the world. This may take some pressure off of Dinara Safina, who has gone out early to much lower-ranked players two weeks straight.

Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka played for over three hours in their Beijing match, with Sharapova emerging the victor over the 9th seed, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5.

Nadia Petrova beat Daniela Hantuchova in a long three-setter, Peng Shuai upset 8th seed Jelena Jankovic (I'm not sure she should even have been playing), and Patty Schnyder--having defeated Urszula Radwanska--was taken out of the tournament by older sister Agnieszka.

Thank heavens. For being very successful, Safina has had a tough run as #1.
